»Vergehen, Straftat«: Das Fremdwort wurde im späten 15. Jh. aus lat. delictum »Verfehlung«, dem substantivierten Part. Perf. von delinquere »ermangeln, fehlen«, entlehnt. Das Part. Präs. lat. delinquens »fehlend« erscheint in unserem Fremdwort Delinquent »Übeltäter« (16. Jh.). Lat. de-linquere bedeutet eigentlich etwa »hinter dem erwarteten Verhalten zurückbleiben«. Über das Grundwort linquere »zurücklassen« vgl. das Fremdwort Reliquie.
